5 Best Japanese Restaurants in Glasgow Worth Booking a Table For

Menu authenticity: I checked that each kitchen offers more than generic spring rolls. Chefs who use traditional techniques or authentic ingredients earned a spot here.

Dietary flexibility: I looked at how well each restaurant handles vegan requests and allergy concerns. Sharing a meal gets complicated when half the table has specific food requirements.

Dining atmosphere: I assessed whether each venue suits quiet solo lunches or loud weekend celebrations. The space you eat in shapes how the food tastes.

Value for money: I weighed the average bill against the actual dining experience. Premium prices are only worth paying when the food quality and portion sizes match.

I spent years thinking all sushi came in plastic supermarket trays, complete with rock-hard rice and slightly sad salmon. That illusion shattered the first time I sat down for a proper bowl of tonkotsu broth that actually stuck to the spoon.

If you want to skip the mediocre meals, you need to know where to book a table. To save you the trial and error, I researched local menus and checked ingredients and pricing across the city.

Here’s my guide to the best Japanese restaurants in Glasgow, and what each kitchen does well.

How much does a Japanese meal cost in Glasgow?

A Japanese meal in Glasgow typically costs between £12 and £60 per person, depending on whether you grab a quick noodle bowl or sit down for interactive teppanyaki.

Dining optionTypical price
Casual takeaway and bento£12 to £18
Hot bowls and sushi sets£15 to £25
Teppanyaki and Wagyu specialities£35 to £60+

1. Ramen Dayo

ramen-dayo

Website: ramendayo.com

Address: 31 Ashton Lane, Hillhead

Contact: 0141 374 0254

Hours: Monday-Sunday, 12:00 PM – 10:00 PM | Third-Party Delivery Services: Sunday-Thursday, 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Craving genuine comfort food often leads you down a rabbit hole of quick fixes and instant powder bases. Ramen Dayo takes the opposite route by simmering their pork bones for hours to pull out maximum depth.

When I dropped by for dinner, I found that their rich tonkotsu broth coated the noodles perfectly. You can even customise the broth’s richness level.

I think it’s one of the best ramen bowls I’ve had in Glasgow.

The menu isn’t just for meat eaters. Roughly half of it can be prepared completely vegan, using rich soymilk bases and textured vegetable protein so everyone gets a satisfying meal.

The catch is that their Ashton Lane venue strictly caps tables at 6 people and won’t join them together. That rules out large family gatherings and bigger celebrations.

Pros

  • Traditional scratch-made broths
  • Extensive vegan alternatives
  • Fully halal chicken dishes
  • Authentic Tokyo izakaya atmosphere

Cons

  • Tables capped at 6 people

Lovely Japanese Restaurant in Glasgow West End

A lovely Japanese restaurant that had lots of different food options to choose from, not just ramen. The vegetable katsu curry that I had tasted amazing and the atmosphere of the restaurant was great too, with relaxing music playing on the speakers and lots of decorations to make it look like a proper Japanese restaurant. The server was very friendly and the toilets were very clean too. Would definitely recommend this restaurant if you’re in the West End of Glasgow!

Best Ramen and Authentic Japanese Atmosphere

I had the best ramen here! Food was excellent and the décor really added to the experience. The place is decorated with authentic Japanese ornaments, posters, masks, etc, with J-Pop music. It felt like stepping into Japan, would highly highly recommend.

2. Yakitori House

yakitori-house

Website: mealmapstore.co.uk/yakitori/

Address: 5 St Bryde Street, East Kilbride

Contact: 01355 234 148

Hours: Monday-Thursday, 12:00 PM – 10:00 PM | Friday-Saturday, 12:00 PM – 11:00 PM | Sunday, 3:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Finding a reliable takeaway that suits different tastes often feels like solving a puzzle. Yakitori House fixes this by going beyond classic skewers into a broader Asian fusion menu.

You can grab traditional Japanese bites alongside modern regional dishes on a single bill, which keeps fussy eaters happy.

The team is also highly allergy-aware, and staff actively guide you away from ingredients like nuts or shellfish.

Their setup works well for the midday lunch crowd, since the kitchen opens at 12 pm from Monday to Saturday.

You can also use their mobile app to skip clunky third-party delivery portals and order your hot meal directly.

Despite the Glasgow association, the shop actually sits out in East Kilbride, so collection means a trip for city centre residents. It’s a much better fit if you live within their direct delivery zone.

Pros

  • Diverse Asian fusion menu
  • Dedicated mobile ordering app
  • Direct in-house delivery service
  • Continuous midday lunch service

Cons

  • Located outside the central city

Fresh Food and Phenomenal Presentation In Person

This is somewhere we order from quite often, but the food when going there in person, as with every delivery vs sitting in situation, is absolutely worth it. The freshness of the food is great, the chicken in particular is so tender, and the presentation is phenomenal. I’ve included their bento box and salmon platter as an example. The staff is very sweet and attentive, they make sure you’re comfortable and are quite conversational too! Ultimately, this is my favourite place for Japanese!

Also, the carrot is shaped like a bird (tori, in japanese) which is beautiful attention to detail.

Great Selection of Dishes and Cocktails

Travelled from Glasgow as we heard good things about this restaurant. Fresh interior, large menu, but we stuck to the japanese menu. We got a wide selection of dishes, and they were all great. Large cocktail menu too.

3. Oiishi Japanese Restaurant & Takeaway

oiishi-japanese-restaurant-takeaway

Website: theoiishi.co.uk

Address: 8-10 Hunter Street, East Kilbride

Contact: 01355 228 583

Hours: Tuesday-Thursday, 4:00 PM – 10:00 PM | Friday-Saturday, 12:00 PM – 10:30 PM | Sunday, 3:30 PM – 9:30 PM

A good meal should reflect the place it comes from as well as its cultural roots. Oiishi Japanese Restaurant & Takeaway blends time-honoured Asian traditions with fresh Scottish produce.

Their award-winning chefs use top-grade local seafood to lift classic sushi rolls, which gives diners a vibrant regional twist. Their balanced bento box sets also make a hearty meal.

When you need to feed a crowd without guessing what everyone wants, their curated combo platters do the heavy lifting. These large spreads bring assorted sushi into one shared package that suits family gatherings.

For mixed groups, they also keep a separate plant-based menu, so vegetarian guests get a full selection rather than a quick afterthought.

However, anyone needing a refund must bring the full meal back to the shop in person, which is a frustrating hurdle for delivery customers.

Pros

  • Fresh Scottish seafood fusion
  • Dedicated plant-based menu
  • Curated group sushi platters
  • Traditional bento box sets

Cons

  • Strict in-person refund policy

Broad Selection and Chill Restaurant Ambience

Nice japanese restaurant in East Kilbride village with a broad selection of dishes.

The nigiri unagi sushi was particularly pleasant and their takoyaki of good quality, though I felt their Tonkotsu ramen, while the ingredients and noodles were good could have used a thicker and more flavourful broth.

The staff are pleasant and helpful and the ambience inside is quite chill and restful.

Street parking only in the area which can be quite in demand.

4. Don Ya Sushi Glasgow

don-ya-sushi-glasgow

Website: donyasushi.co.uk

Address: 17 West Princes Street Basement

Contact: 0141 230 5421

Hours: Tuesday-Sunday, 12:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Leftover ingredients and pre-packaged rice ruin the delicate balance of raw seafood. At Don Ya Sushi Glasgow, the kitchen guarantees every item is prepped fresh on the day you order it.

That standard gives you vibrant flavours and the right bite in every roll. Instead of store-bought condiments, the chefs make their own umami miso gyoza sauce and hand-made mayonnaise.

They apply these scratch-made touches to a premium lineup that includes luxury Wagyu beef and rich foie gras nigiri.

If you live within half a mile of their West Princes Street basement, you also get free delivery.

However, solo diners miss out on their signature Wagyu Sukiyaki hot pot, since the restaurant requires tables of two or more to order it. That is a letdown if you were hoping to try it on a solo visit.

Pros

  • Guaranteed daily fresh preparation
  • Premium Wagyu and foie gras
  • Scratch-made signature sauces
  • Free delivery within half a mile

Cons

  • Hot pot requires two diners

Amazing Authentic Japanese Food and Friendly Service

The food was amazing! Cooked to perfection, and very authentic (and I am from Japan!) using fresh ingredients. Best Japanese I’ve had in Scotland. Would highly recommend any of the rice bowl dishes (Donburi) and super light and crispy tempura vegetables and king prawns. It is very clean and the gentleman who served was very friendly and helpful 🙂 Would return again for sure!

Sitting down for dinner often feels passive while you wait for a plate to arrive. Sapporo Teppanyaki Glasgow turns the meal into a blazing hotplate show right in front of you.

The chefs combine expert trickery with dramatic flames to create an energetic atmosphere that keeps everyone entertained. That energy carries into their lively weekend boozy brunch in Merchant City.

Every chef on the grills trains for 5 years, so they understand authentic culinary techniques. You can also request adjustments in real time as they cook your meat, which gives you control over the final flavour.

A friend recently booked their private room and loved tailoring a bespoke menu away from the busy main floor.

Just be aware, though, that an automatic 12.5% service charge is added to every bill. This noticeably raises the final cost of your evening out.

Pros

  • Interactive hotplate dining shows
  • Highly trained specialist chefs
  • Customisable private event menus
  • Weekend daytime boozy brunch

Cons

  • Automatic 12.5% service charge
