The Best Stonemasons in Glasgow Keeping Local Buildings Strong for Years

  • Experience and accreditation - We looked for stonemasons with at least three years of hands-on experience in Glasgow, ideally with qualifications like the SVQ Stonemasonry (Construction) SCQF level 6.
  • Work quality - We considered whether they consistently deliver strong results by reviewing their portfolios, checking the types of stone and mortar they use, and looking at guarantees or warranties offered.
  • Service coverage - We checked if they work across most areas of Glasgow and whether they can handle both small repairs and larger restoration projects without long delays.
  • Professionalism - We assessed whether they arrive on time, communicate clearly about timelines and costs, and treat both clients and properties with respect. We also noted how quickly they respond to enquiries and provide detailed quotes.
  • Price fairness - We evaluated whether their pricing reflects the quality of their craftsmanship, their level of experience, and the durability of the materials they use.

I’ve always been amazed by my grandparents’ house. The tall windows, carved stone, and little details made it feel like an authentic piece of Glasgow’s Victorian story.

Lately, though, the years have started to show, and the home has lost some of its shine. That was when I decided to step in and do my part to preserve it by reaching out to a local stonemason who could bring it back to life.

The result was excellent, but finding a professional I could fully trust with the project wasn’t easy. That’s why I’ll be sharing some of the best stonemasons in Glasgow so others can protect and restore their own homes with confidence.

How much do stonemasons in Glasgow charge for their services?

Stonemasons in Glasgow usually charge around £37.50 per hour for their services. Keep in mind that the final cost can vary depending on the type of work, the condition of the stone, and the level of detail involved.

Stonemasons Glasgow has more than 30 years of experience, making them one of the most established choices for stonework in the city. They handle a wide range of jobs, including lime pointing, stone building, and chimney repairs.

They also specialise in Lithomex repairs, which use a specially formulated material that can be shaped and coloured to look almost identical to natural stone. It’s often a more affordable option than replacing the stone completely.

A big plus is that major work comes with guarantees lasting up to 25 years, which gives real peace of mind. Another thing I like is their offer of free trial work, letting you see the quality before committing.

On the downside, some people say they don’t respond to enquiries. I’m also disappointed to learn that they’re selective about which projects they take on.

Pros

  • More than 30 years of experience
  • Can do Lithomex repairs
  • Offers professional stone cleaning services
  • Guarantees lasting up to 25 years
  • Offers free trial work

Cons

  • Sometimes misses enquiries

From start to finish, I had absolutely no doubts I chose correctly

“Highly recommend. Required stone replacement, rendering, re-pointing and re-sealing of the windows of a ground floor blonde sandstone tenement. From the initial phone call they were out within a week and the survey was thorough and professional, providing expert guidance on solutions. This continued with great communication on quotes and provided realistic timescales which they stood by. The lads who came out were very experienced, keen, genuinely enjoyed their work taking great pride in what they do and very easy to get on with. This company provides a premium service and goes beyond expectations. From start to finish, I had absolutely no doubts I chose correctly. Would not hesitate to contact them again for any future properties. John, Corey and Kieran, thanks again and all the best.”

I hired A & M Sandstone Restoration & Stone Repairs to bring my grandparents’ home back to its original look. They have more than 20 years of experience and cover a lot of ground with lime pointing, stone cleaning, and repairs.

What drew me in was their focus on historic preservation. They can handle full property restorations, which meant I didn’t need to bring in other trades for the project. That made the whole process easier to manage.

The result was solid. The house looks close to the old photos we keep, and the 30-year guarantee gave me confidence that the money was well spent.

That said, not every story I’ve heard about them was great. Some people mentioned problems with aftercare and said they had to chase the company more than once before issues were sorted.

Pros

  • More than 20 years of experience
  • Strong focus on historic preservation
  • Offers professional stone cleaning services
  • 30-year guarantee on work
  • Free quotes available

Cons

  • Has issues with aftercare and follow-up
  • Few reports of delays on projects

JD Stonemasonry is another long-established firm with around 25 years of experience in Glasgow. They handle a wide mix of work, including chimney repairs, stone repairs, and cladding installation.

I was impressed by the fact that they also take on detailed stone carving, which is handy if you want something more personal than standard finishes.

Their sandstone conservation is another strong point, using pH-neutral soap and careful crack sealing to keep older stonework in good shape.

Another big plus is that they can source and supply natural stone themselves, which saves you the hassle of finding the right material for a new build or repair.

On the flip side, I did notice they don’t have a clear warranty policy. They’re also harder to book at weekends, so you’ll probably need to do some planning ahead.

Pros

  • 25 years of experience
  • Can source and supply natural stone
  • Offers bespoke stone carving
  • Skilled in sandstone repair and conservation
  • Free estimates available

Cons

  • Limited weekend availability
  • Lacks a clear warranty policy

If you like the idea of keeping things old-fashioned, HRH Masonry is worth a look. They started in 2016 and put most of their focus on traditional stonemasonry methods to help preserve buildings across Glasgow.

Their lime harling service is a good example. It’s an old Scottish technique where lime mortar is thrown onto walls to create a rough finish that lets the building breathe. It’s practical as well as authentic.

Stone dressing is another strength. They cut and shape new stone so it blends in with the original work, and with access to 100 lime mortar colours, they can make a close match.

They also work with rope access teams for tall or awkward jobs. The only serious drawbacks are their small team and slower timelines, since they prefer traditional methods.

Pros

  • Almost 10 years of experience
  • Skilled in lime harling and lime pointing
  • Access to 100 lime mortar colours
  • Experienced with stone dressing and repair
  • Has partnerships with rope access teams for tricky jobs

Cons

  • Small team
  • Longer timelines due to traditional methods

The guys have done a really great job

“HRH have just just rebuilt part of our sandstone front wall that was ready to fall apart, the guys have done a really great job and the wall is looking much, much better than it had been and a few neighbours have commented on how good it looks now. They kept us fully updated on what they were doing and completed it very quickly for us.”

Very professional and efficient service

“John and the team at HRH Masonry were absolutely fantastic. Very professional and efficient service. A company I would confidently recommend to friends and family.”

Robert Findlay Stonemasons & Builders has been part of Glasgow since 1985, which means they bring around 40 years of experience to the table. That’s why I’m not surprised that their portfolio includes big names like Glasgow University and St Margaret’s Church.

Their main strength is stone restoration. If your sandstone is worn or weathered, they can clean it, repair it, and repoint it.

For anyone unsure about the condition of their stonework, they also carry out detailed surveys that give a clear picture of what needs attention.

They do more than restoration, too. Landscaping and paving are part of their services, so if you’re planning a new garden or patio, they can help.

Unfortunately, they’re often busy, and the lack of published operating hours can make arranging a booking less straightforward.

Pros

  • 40 years of experience
  • Skilled in sandstone restoration
  • Offers detailed stone surveys for older properties
  • Handles landscaping and paving
  • Free, no obligation quotes

Cons

  • Tends to get fully booked quickly
  • No clear operating hours published

They have meticulous attention to detail and take huge pride in their work

“We recently had our sandstone and pointing restored. We also had to get our front wall refurbished as it was unsafe in places. We are absolutely delighted with the work that Craig, Robert and their staff did. They have meticulous attention to detail and take huge pride in their work. I would absolutely not hesitate in recommending them to anyone looking for professional craftsmen, you won’t be disappointed.”

-Debbie Holley, Google Reviews

The job they did was top notch

“Used Robert Findlay stonemasons to repoint our house, clean the sandstone and restore several damaged sections. The job they did was top notch, couldn’t be happier with the work done! Their customer service was also great, they came out to price the job the same day that I contacted them about it and then were accommodating throughout the work. Definitely recommend if you are needing any work done.”
