DIY is made super easy with the best home improvement shops in Glasgow!

Product range - We prefer shops that stock a wide variety of items, from everyday basics like screws and paint to larger materials such as timber boards, flooring, and power tools.

Extra services - We assessed whether these shops offer useful extras like tool hire, eco-friendly materials, and loyalty schemes to improve the shopping experience of their customers.

Location and access - We considered whether these shops are easy to reach by car or public transport and whether they offer click-and-collect or delivery services.

Customer service - We evaluated how helpful and approachable the staff are, especially when it comes to giving practical advice. We also checked whether they respond to enquiries quickly.

Price fairness - We looked at whether their prices are reasonable given the quality of their products, the extra services they provide, their accessibility, and their returns policies.

I’ve recently gotten into DIY after watching a few YouTube videos. At first, I thought I’d only manage small fixes, but I’ve been surprised at how much I can do myself. It feels good to improve the house bit by bit without needing to call a tradesman.

These days, I find myself popping into home improvement stores more often. I like keeping a few tools, paints, and materials at home so I’m ready whenever I want to start a project.

Since I know how handy it is to have good shops nearby, I’ve put together a list of some of the best home improvement shops in Glasgow for DIYers and tradesmen alike.

One of my regular stops for home improvement supplies is B&Q. They’re easy to reach, with three big locations in Glasgow where you’ll find items like furniture, appliances, and landscaping materials.

What makes shopping here even handier is their click-and-collect service, which can have your order ready in as little as 15 minutes. Free delivery on orders above £75 is another bonus when you need a lot of supplies at once.

I also like that they run a membership program that gives you rewards and discounts, and their 90-day return policy is generous compared to the usual month you get elsewhere.

That said, I’ve run into the odd bit of rude behaviour from staff, and the discounts aren’t always consistent between stores and online, so your experience can vary depending on where you shop.

Pros

  • 3 locations in Glasgow
  • Click-and-collect ready in as little as 15 minutes
  • 90-day return policy
  • Has a free membership program
  • Free delivery on orders over £75
  • Offers financing options

Cons

  • Some rude staff
  • Discounts and special offers aren’t consistent across locations

With 11 locations across the city, Screwfix is another handy store for topping up on DIY supplies. Their range is broad, covering power tools, plumbing gear, paints, and plenty more.

They also sell refurbished tools if you’re looking to save some money. These come with a 1-year warranty, which makes them a fairly safe bet even though they’ve been used before.

I often turn to Screwfix when I need something quickly. Their click-and-collect service can have an order ready in about a minute, which is hard to beat! They also have a decent next-day delivery service.

If you really need something straight away, their sprint delivery can bring items to your door in around 20 minutes! Unfortunately, it’s not available everywhere, so you’ll need to check this website to see if your neighbourhood is covered.

  • 11 locations in Glasgow
  • Click-and-collect can prepare orders in about a minute
  • Offers next-day delivery
  • Sprint delivery available for urgent orders

Brilliant place to buy a multitude of DIY items

“Brilliant place to buy a multitude of DIY items. They sell everything from paint to power tools and adhesives to pipes for plumbing. You don’t have to be a trade person to shop there. Order online and collect in an hour and if they don’t have your item they will get it the next day or search a nearby store. The staff are always helpful and the store is always clean and nicely laid out.”

-Chilli Palmer, Google Reviews

Toolstation has been around since 2003 and has grown quickly across the UK, with six branches now open in Glasgow.

They carry a wide range of products from well-known names like DeWalt and Dulux, including power tools, plumbing supplies, and even smart home gadgets.

Their service is fairly competitive, with click-and-collect often ready within 5 minutes and free delivery available on orders over £40.

They also run the TS Club, a free membership that gives 5% off every purchase. For tradespeople, there is the option of a trade account, which offers the same discount along with up to 60 days to pay.

The main drawbacks are in the delivery and returns. Items over 30 kg are only delivered on weekdays, and if you return something, you may face a £9 collection fee.

Pros

  • 6 locations in Glasgow
  • Click-and-collect often ready in 5 minutes
  • Free delivery on orders over £40
  • Has a membership program
  • Trade Account offers discounts plus up to 60 days to pay

Cons

  • Items over 30 kg only delivered on weekdays

I think TradePoint Glasgow is a solid choice for tradesmen and serious DIYers. It’s a sister company of B&Q, so you’ll see an almost similar range of products, but there are a few extras that make it worth a look.

The tool hire is one of their best features. If you need a cement mixer, a scaffold tower, or a specialist drill, you can rent it instead of paying full price for something you might only use once.

They also take part in the electrical recycling scheme, so when you buy a new tool or appliance, you can hand in the old one, and they’ll recycle it properly.

Delivery is free on orders over £50, and their loyalty program gives steady discounts, though it’s only open to tradespeople. Some of their products are also online only, which can be a bit limiting.

Pros

  • 3 locations in Glasgow
  • Offers tool hire
  • Has electrical and electronic recycling services
  • Free delivery on orders over £50
  • Has a customer loyalty program
  • Bulk delivery available for heavy materials

Cons

  • Some products only available online
  • Loyalty scheme limited to trade customers

Inex Home Hardware may not have as many branches as the bigger chains, but it still has a few strong points worth mentioning. Their shop carries a decent range of products, including garden gear, furniture, and even smart appliances.

One thing I appreciate is that every product comes with a 1-year warranty, which makes it easier to get a replacement if something turns out faulty.

They also offer free nationwide delivery on orders over £50. On top of that, their PayPal Pay in 3 option can be useful if you need something quickly but want to spread the cost.

There are some drawbacks, too. Prices are a bit higher than the big stores, and they don’t deliver on weekends.

Pros

  • 1-year warranty on all products
  • Free UK mainland delivery on orders over £50
  • Order tracking available through Evri
  • Offers financing options

Cons

  • Slightly above-average prices
  • Doesn’t deliver on weekends
