5 Best Thyroid Specialists in Glasgow for a Thorough Diagnosis & Treatment

✔ Consultant expertise - We prioritised consultant endocrinologists, not general physicians dabbling in hormones, particularly for complex cases like Hashimoto’s, Graves’, or thyroid nodules.

✔ Depth of diagnostics - A good specialist goes beyond Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and offers full thyroid panels, with access to in-house ultrasound and biopsy if nodules are suspected.

✔ Access speed - Fast appointment availability matters, ideally within days or a couple of weeks, not months like NHS pathways (especially when symptoms are affecting daily life).

✔ Clinical listening and treatment clarity - We looked for those who actually listen, explain results clearly, and offer practical, staged treatment plans rather than brushing off symptoms as “stress” or “age-related.”

Thyroid issues are notoriously difficult to diagnose. You feel utterly exhausted, but the computer says “normal.”

I’ve been there myself, and while brilliant physiotherapy sessions helped me regain mobility, they didn’t fix my deeper thyroid questions. Fatigue, hair loss, and weight shifts don’t disappear just because your TSH looks fine.

In Glasgow, that frustration is amplified by long waits within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, where a routine endocrinology appointment can take months! Many of us start looking for a private thyroid specialist to go beyond surface-level blood tests (and actually listen).

That’s why this guide is for anyone needing faster answers, a 2nd opinion, or proper management of conditions like Hashimoto’s, Graves’, or stubborn thyroid nodules.

How much does it cost to see a thyroid specialist in Glasgow?

Seeing a private thyroid specialist in Glasgow typically costs £200 to £280 for an initial consultation, with follow-ups at around £150 to £200.
If your consultant orders deeper blood work beyond TSH, such as T3, T4, or antibodies, expect to pay £50 to £150, while a thyroid ultrasound costs from £200 to £400, depending on the clinic and imaging detail.
Most consultants are covered by Bupa, AXA, and Aviva, but you’ll almost always need a GP referral first. The referral doesn’t have to be NHS, as a private GP referral is usually accepted.

1. Dr Shiva Mongolu

I ended up seeing Dr Shiva Mongolu after months of dragging myself through the day with low energy that didn’t make sense on paper, as I’m as athletic as they come.

He practices privately through clinics such as Spire Healthcare, and from my first appointment, it was clear that he deals with complex hormonal and thyroid issues rather than quick, surface-level fixes.

He placed little emphasis on a single “normal” TSH number. Instead, he ordered a full thyroid blood panel and took the time to explain to me how thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal hormones can overlap in ways that quietly wreck my energy levels.

When nodules were mentioned as a possibility, he didn’t hesitate to arrange a thyroid ultrasound for me, which helped rule out structural issues early. That decisiveness alone saved me weeks of anxiety and back-and-forth that I’d already experienced elsewhere.

The overall experience with him felt calm and methodical, not rushed. I left each appointment knowing what we were testing, why we were testing it, and what the next step would be if results came back borderline instead of textbook-perfect.

That said, appointments can fill up fast. Because Dr Mongolu is not Glasgow-based, travel or virtual consultations are likely required.

Pros

  • Strong focus on complex thyroid and hormonal disorders
  • Willing to go with full thyroid panels for deeper diagnosis
  • Clear, calm explanations to patients

Cons

  • Not Glasgow-based, so travel is necessary
  • Appointments can require advanced booking
  • Less suitable for frequent follow-ups among locals

After Mum’s menopause symptoms started overlapping uncomfortably with classic thyroid red flags, she asked me to go with her to Dr John R Lindsay.

He’s best known for complex hormonal issues, particularly where menopause, thyroid function, and general endocrine health blur into one frustrating mess.

We’re glad he didn’t treat hormone therapy as a guessing game and was clear that thyroid health had to be properly ruled out first.

What reassured Mum was how thorough the testing was. He arranged a full thyroid blood panel and didn’t rely on TSH alone. He also discussed thyroid ultrasound as the next step if the results suggested structural concerns.

My mum’s patient experience felt measured and respectful, especially for someone already anxious and exhausted about ageing-related symptoms. Nothing was rushed, and each appointment ended with a clear explanation of what was hormonal, what might be thyroid-related, and what came next.

The downside? Costs rise quickly if extended hormone panels and imaging are required, particularly without insurance coverage.

Pros

  • Solid experience in complex hormonal cases
  • Methodical, evidence-based approach
  • Full thyroid blood panels, not just basic screening tests

Cons

  • Appointment availability can be limited
  • Private fees can add up quickly for extensive testing

Very reassured after my appointment with him today

I saw Dr Lindsay at the clinic in Kingsbridge today. A gentleman who made me feel at ease right away. Had read my notes prior to the appointment and had a good understanding of everything that was going on with me medically. A very clear plan was put in place before I left the clinic – very reassured after my appointment with him today.

3. Dr Masud Haq

Business hours: Monday, 2–6 PM

My best pal finally saw Dr Masud Haq after her goitre became too obvious to ignore, and NHS timelines felt endless. He’s become sought-after for complex thyroid disorders, particularly visible goitres, nodules, and difficult-to-manage hyper/hypothyroidism.

He approached my friend’s case with clinical clarity rather than alarm. She liked that he focused on an accurate diagnosis before talking about treatment.

He explained antibodies to her and the importance of T3 and T4 compared to a single TSH result. He also ordered a full thyroid blood panel and thyroid ultrasound straightaway to assess size, structure, and whether biopsy or surgical referral is needed.

She was anxious and conscious about how noticeable the lump on her neck had become, so the doctor’s calm explanation behind each test reassured her. She said she never felt rushed but seen and listened to.

However, she did pay a large sum for the repeated imaging, biopsies, and surgical referrals because of her goitre. This could get especially hard among those without insurance coverage.

Pros

  • Proactive use of full thyroid panels
  • Quick access to thyroid ultrasound
  • Expert in goitres, nodules, and structural abnormalities

Cons

  • Can become costly when imaging or biopsy is required
  • Follow-up scheduling may depend on hospital imaging availability

Dr Haq is an expert in endocrinology and thyroid health

Dr Haq is an expert in endocrinology and thyroid health. Alongside this, he is the kindest medical professional I have ever had the good fortune to have had looking after my health. He listens to his patients’ symptoms and history, as well as considering blood test results. Dr Haq is also very considerate and readily available. All the nurses at the Spire Hospital speak exceptionally highly of him, too. I am very grateful to be under his care.

4. Dr Atir Khan

After months of unexplained weight gain, fatigue, and that nagging fear that it might be Cushing’s rather than just work-related stress, my neighbour booked an appointment with Dr Atir Khan.

He immediately put her at ease by taking her seriously, along with the possibility that multiple hormone systems could be involved. Instead of fixating on one marker, he explained how adrenal hormones, cortisol patterns, and thyroid function can overlap in ways that are easily missed in routine GP testing.

After ordering a comprehensive hormone work-up and alongside a full thyroid blood panel, he took the time to walk her through what each result might mean before they even came back.

A thyroid ultrasound was also discussed early on, not as a scare tactic, but as a logical next step should bloods suggest anything structural. The overall experience felt steady and grounding for her, thanks to clear plans instead of vague “wait it out” advice.

Her only issue is that Dr Khan handles complex endocrine cases, so appointments can be hard to secure. The costs can also rise quickly once extensive hormone testing and imaging are needed.

Pros

  • Particularly strong in adrenal and cortisol-related disorders
  • Clear, non-alarming explanation of complex hormone interactions
  • Takes early symptoms seriously

Cons

  • Not ideal for patients seeking simple thyroid checkups only
  • Private care may require careful budgeting if insurance limits apply

5. Dr Franklin Joseph

An anonymous colleague admitted he was struggling with low energy and low testosterone and wanted answers fast. He was due to propose to his girlfriend, and needed to ensure he was in great shape before doing so.

I referred him to Dr Franklin Joseph, who’s become known for treating complex hormonal issues, particularly testosterone imbalance, thyroid dysfunction, and metabolic conditions that overlap and muddy the issue.

Thankfully, he didn’t treat the low testosterone as a standalone problem. He was clear to my workmate that his thyroid health had to be checked properly alongside it.

He immediately ordered a full thyroid blood panel along with broader hormone testing to avoid partial results. For anything unexplained, he made sure my pal was ready to go through a thyroid ultrasound as an early next step.

For something he’d been putting off out of embarrassment, the appointment felt surprisingly easy for him. He was able to realistically rule things out or in and what the next few weeks would look like.

That said, getting a slot early with Dr Joseph requires persistence, particularly during busy periods.

Pros

  • Comfortable dealing with male hormonal health
  • Initiates speedy, time-sensitive blood work
  • Regards hormones as a system, not isolated numbers

Cons

  • Less suitable for a slow, monitor-first approach
  • Popularity can limit last-minute availability

Customer Review
