Put an end to family feuds with the best family lawyers in Glasgow!

Experience and credentials - We looked for family lawyers who have at least three years of professional experience and are members of the Law Society of Scotland.

Specialisations - We prefer lawyers who focus on family law and are knowledgeable in various areas, such as divorce and separation, child custody, and prenuptial agreements.

Track record - We considered their past accomplishments and feedback from former clients to see whether they can provide effective support and guidance for your legal needs.

Professionalism - We checked whether they always treat their clients with respect and take the time to explain cases clearly along with the possible ways to resolve them. We also assessed how quickly they respond to enquiries.

Price fairness - We also considered whether their fees are transparent and fair, including whether they offer fixed-fee options or flexible billing that suits different budgets.

Going through a legal fight with family is tough. It involves people you’ve shared memories with, which makes it even harder. The stress and emotions can be overwhelming, and the process itself is rarely straightforward.

That’s why having a good family lawyer matters. They’ll guide you through the legal side of things and make sure your case is handled properly so you’ve got the best chance of a fair outcome.

I’ve put together a list of some of the best family lawyers in Glasgow so you know where to turn when things get complicated.

How much does it cost to hire a family lawyer in Glasgow?

Rooney Family Law has been around since 2017 and focuses entirely on family law. That means you’re dealing with specialists rather than general solicitors.

They handle divorce, child contact, and even complex matters like adoption. I was struck by the fact that they also take on high-net-worth divorce, offering discreet representation and using their own forensic accountants and valuers to protect assets and wealth.

It’s also worth highlighting that their billing style is different from most firms. They charge in three-minute units instead of six, which feels fairer for short calls. They also don’t charge travel fees within cities, and they offer fixed fees for some undefended divorces.

Unfortunately, they don’t take legal aid. Furthermore, their hourly fee for a family lawyer is £300, which is quite expensive.

Pros

  • Almost 10 years of experience
  • Expert in high-net-worth divorce cases
  • 3-minute billing units for phone consultations
  • No travel charges within major cities
  • Fixed fee available for some undefended divorces

Cons

  • Not a legal aid solicitor
  • Hourly rates are on the higher side

My entire divorce process was seamless

“From start to finish, my entire divorce process was seamless. I was able to contact Lynn at any time, and she was always more than happy to help with my many questions and kept me informed throughout. Forming and signing affidavits was straightforward and Lynn was in touch when my divorce was granted to let me know.

I hope I never have to use a family lawyer again, but if I did I wouldn’t hesitate to use Rooney Family Law and can’t recommend them highly enough.”

– Hayley Brown, Google Reviews

I felt supported the entire way

“From the start of the divorce process to finish, I felt supported the entire way. The process was made clear from the start. There was always somebody available for my concerns or to update me on how the case was going whether I needed something or the team required anything from me. I can’t stress enough how well I felt my case was handled, making a long difficult situation much easier. I cannot thank Julia and Lynn enough.”

Millen Solicitors is a small law firm run by Julie Millen and Lora Johnstone. Both have decades of experience dealing with divorce, separation, cohabitation rights, and guardianship.

They also help with wills and powers of attorney, so it’s not just about disputes.

What I found useful is that they deal with interdicts and protective orders, which can be vital if you need quick protection from an abuser. They also represent families at children’s hearings and can step in if a minor has found themselves in trouble.

It’s also a good thing that they don’t charge anything for your first appointment and can check if you qualify for legal aid.

The only major drawback is that, as a smaller firm, the number of clients they can accept at a time is fairly limited.

Pros

  • Offers help with wills and powers of attorney
  • Can provide support with interdicts and protective orders
  • Can represent families at children’s hearings
  • First appointment is free
  • Accepts legal aid

Cons

  • Small team
  • Office closed on weekends

I can’t recommend Millen Solicitors enough

“I can’t recommend Millen Solicitors enough. Julie and her team were outstanding throughout my case—not only incredibly professional in their legal work, but also supportive on a personal level. They gave me the space to process the emotions that came with some really tough times, while also being truthful and direct when I needed to see the situation for what it was. Julie’s empathy combined with her honesty and expertise made all the difference. Thanks to her and her team, we achieved more than I ever imagined possible, and my family now has opportunities we never thought we’d have. I’m so grateful for everything they’ve done.”

They truly change lives for the better

“Julie and her team have helped me with multiple cases and have been absolutely amazing! They are very professional and dedicated to your matters and work thoroughly to be able to assist you with any questions and manage the case in every detail. They truly change lives for the better and I will forever be grateful.”

It’s not often you think of family law as an emergency, but it’s reassuring to know there’s a firm in Glasgow that offers round-the-clock help when you need it.

John Kilcoyne & Co Solicitors have over 20 years of experience handling divorce, cohabitation, and domestic violence cases, so they’re used to dealing with difficult situations.

What I like is that they also take on Children’s Panel work, especially when a minor is facing an offence or when decisions about a child’s welfare are on the table.

Their willingness to accept legal aid makes them more approachable, too, especially for families who might not be able to afford private fees.

On the flip side, they’re very busy. With so many clients, it can sometimes be hard to get a response to your enquiries.

Pros

  • 20 years of experience
  • 24-hour phone line
  • Accepts legal aid
  • Active in Children’s Panel hearings

Cons

  • Availability can be limited due to high demand
  • Sometimes misses enquiries

If you want a firm with a strong reputation to handle your case, Harper Macleod LLP is worth a look. They’ve been serving Glasgow since 1988 and are regularly listed in The Legal 500, a benchmarking platform that highlights the top-performing law firms in the country.

I was curious about why they’re rated so highly, so I looked into it. Their family law team is a big part of the answer. They deal with divorce, separation, and financial settlement cases.

They also advise couples who want to start a family through surrogacy or assisted conception. On top of that, they guide people through adoption, which can be a long and stressful process.

That said, they’re one of the pricier options you’ll find for family law. They’re also not a legal aid solicitor, which can be a barrier for some.

Pros

  • Almost 40 years of experience
  • Recognised in The Legal 500 and Chambers Guide to the Legal Profession
  • Provides legal advice in surrogacy and assisted conception
  • Can help with adoption process

Cons

  • Fees are on the higher side
  • Not a legal aid solicitor

Communication was frequent and we were kept fully informed of proceedings. We would not hesitate to recommend Harper MacLeod to friends and family and thank Amy for her attention throughout the past year, it was very much appreciated.”

Another high-profile law firm you can turn to is Jones Whyte. They’ve been around since 2013 and built a team of solicitors and paralegals who focus on divorce, prenuptial agreements, and other family matters.

One thing I found interesting is how they support grandparents, since in Scotland, they don’t automatically have rights to see their grandkids. The firm helps them apply for contact orders and often pushes mediation first.

I was also surprised to see that they provide post-separation counselling. It’s not something you usually expect from a law firm, and it shows they understand the emotional side of family disputes.

On the money side, they offer fixed-fee packages for straightforward cases and sometimes allow deferred payment.

However, communication is one aspect they need to work on. Some people I spoke with struggled to get proper responses to their enquiries, while some were met with rude behaviour.

Pros

  • More than 10 years of experience
  • Offers support for grandparents’ rights
  • Can provide post-separation counselling
  • Offers fixed-fee packages for straightforward cases
  • Deferred payment options available

Cons

  • Sometimes misses enquiries
  • Some rude lawyers

They provided us with the highest quality of service

“We really can’t thank Carli Cooper and her team at Jones White Solicitors, enough. They provided us with the highest quality of service, representation and care. My family felt supported throughout our journey. We are forever grateful for their support and commitment to our family.”

– Jamie Menzies, Google Reviews

My case was a great success!

“I am very satisfied with the work of the lawyer and the rest of the team. Very professional people, good contact and willingness to help. I even got a translator at my disposal, no costs were covered and my case was a great success!!! I would like to thank the entire team, especially Ms. Monika and lawyer Ronan.”
