The best carpenters in Glasgow prove that handmade is still the finest!

Experience and craftsmanship - We prefer carpenters and joiners with at least three years of professional experience who also hold the necessary certifications to operate, such as the National Qualification (NQ) in Carpentry and Joinery.

Specialist skills - We evaluated whether they can handle a diverse range of woodwork needs, including fitted shelving, staircases, custom furniture, and room renovations.

Quality of materials - We assessed the timber and finishes they typically use, the durability of their work, and whether they are upfront about sourcing reliable, long-lasting materials.

Communication and reliability - We checked how quickly they respond to enquiries, how clearly they explain costs and timelines, and whether they consistently attend appointments as promised.

Price fairness - We also considered whether their prices are fair considering their experience, the quality of their work, the guarantees they provide, their availability, and any additional services offered.

I’d been looking for ways to freshen up my place, and one idea that really stuck was adding bookshelves. Since I love reading, it felt like the perfect mix of practical and personal.

But I didn’t want to go with the usual flatpack stuff that I never quite get right. Instead, I asked a carpenter to build a couple of shelves that actually suit the style of my home.

It worked so well that I decided to put together a list of the best carpenters in Glasgow to help anyone with their woodwork needs.

How much do carpenters in Glasgow charge for their services?

Most carpenters in Glasgow will charge around £35 per hour for their services. The exact price can vary depending on the type of materials, how complex the job is, and the carpenter you choose.

Barry McCafferty Joiner is a family business that started in 2018, though Barry himself has nearly 20 years in the trade.

What I like is they’re flexible and can take on both small and large projects, whether it’s flooring, fencing, or full home extensions.

It’s quite impressive that they can handle more specialised work, including structural alterations if you need to remove load-bearing walls. They can also build outdoor offices, which is handy if you want to make better use of your garden space.

Another strength is how straightforward they make the process. They can supply the materials, and they have a solid network of local trades, so you’re not left chasing a plumber or electrician yourself.

The only drawbacks are that appointments are arranged only by phone, and with a small team, it can be difficult to secure a booking during busy periods.

Pros

  • Lead carpenter has 20 years of experience
  • Can do structural alterations
  • Can construct outdoor offices
  • Strong network of trusted local trades
  • Can supply materials

Cons

  • Appointments arranged only by phone
  • Smaller outfit, so availability can be limited

Work has always been high quality

“Barry has completed a number of projects at our house over the last couple of years—including fitting skirting boards, building a bespoke cupboard and replacing damaged floor boards. He’s a nice chap, work has always been high quality and he is incredibly tidy.”

-Richard Selfe, Google Reviews

Everything finished to the highest spec

“We have used Barry for lots of jobs in the house—loft flooring, kitchen units, wall panelling, built in wardrobes, shelving. Everything finished to the highest spec, very competitive prices and a great guy. Wouldn’t use anyone else!”

Cf Joinery is a fairly new option in Glasgow, starting up in 2023, but they’ve already taken on both residential and commercial work.

They handle the usual joinery jobs like doors, flooring, kitchens, bathrooms, and loft conversions, making them a handy one-stop shop for most projects.

What stood out to me is their shopfitting service, since they cover the full interior, including fixtures, fittings, and furniture. But because shopfitting can be costly, they offer payment plans that break the bill into easier instalments.

It’s also nice that they back their work with a satisfaction guarantee and will return to fix small issues for free if something crops up shortly after the job.

However, their lack of experience can certainly be an issue for most people. It’s also disappointing that they sometimes don’t respond to enquiries.

Pros

  • Covers both residential and commercial work
  • Offers staged payment plans for bigger jobs
  • Free written quotations
  • Customer satisfaction guarantee

Cons

  • Relatively new in the industry
  • Sometimes misses enquiries

First class service from CF Joinery

“First class service from CF Joinery. Craig at short notice came out and built us a new step prior to us moving house after a historical building extension warrant which was only flagged by our solicitor 9 days before our move date never passed regulations by the council surveyor.

Craig and his colleague came out to inspect the same day we contacted him and within a few days (on his day off may I add), they removed the old step and built a new one in time for us prior to moving. We can’t thank you enough for this, it’s greatly appreciated.”

So impressed by the work and results

“First time we’ve used this company. So impressed by the work and results. Absolute perfection. Would highly recommend. Will be 100% using again and again in the future.

Craig is a gem of a bloke who is very talented”

Quality Joiners has been part of Glasgow’s trade since 1997 and is one of the most experienced options I’ve added to the list. They take on a wide range of jobs, including custom joinery, door trimming, and shopfitting for local businesses.

They also handle attic work, turning old storage spaces into usable rooms. But what really got my attention is their soundproofing service, which can be useful if you live in an older property where noise travels too easily.

Another point worth noting is their maintenance service. They can keep fittings and fixtures in good condition without pushing for full replacements, and they’re happy to give free advice if you’re unsure about whether to repair or buy new.

That said, I’m disappointed that they don’t clearly outline warranty policies, which makes comparisons tricky, and they often book up fast, so waiting times can stretch.

Pros

  • 28 years of experience
  • Covers both residential and commercial work
  • Specialist soundproofing for older flats
  • Can do attic conversions
  • Offers maintenance and repair support
  • Provides free advice and quotations

Cons

  • No clear warranty policy outlined
  • Tends to get fully booked quickly

I was very happy with the quality of service and work done

“I was very happy with the quality of service and work done. Rodger made modifications to the stairs in my house to remove a banister and build out new treads in the corner. It was a tricky, bespoke piece of joinery and the finished job looks great. His communication and advice was great throughout and he finished the job quickly and to a high standard. Would definitely recommend.”

Wizard-like levels of carpentry

“Rodger and the team did an excellent job for us. Removal of an old front door, and replacement with a beautifully fitted mahogany door and frame, alongside refurbishment of the original storm doors and panelling of the vestibule. Wizard-like levels of carpentry from Stuart. Proper craftsmen and a very personable, hard-working team. So good, we got them back to refurb our back door, where an equally excellent job was done. I thoroughly recommend.”

After finding out that Creation Carpentry specialises in bespoke joinery, I felt confident asking them to build the bookshelves I’d been dreaming about. They’re able to take on a wide range of pieces, including seating, windows, and staircases.

They also make Victorian-style entry doors, which I’m already considering for the future.

I did need to drive out to their workshop in Kirkintilloch to get the shelves sorted, but it felt worth the effort because of the way they work.

Everything is designed and manufactured in their own space, so your home isn’t cluttered with tools and materials. They also handle the fitting themselves, which saves you from having to bring in a separate handyman.

The only drawbacks I noticed were the travel to their workshop and their response time, since it usually takes them a full day to reply.

Pros

  • Handles design, manufacture, and fitting in-house
  • Can create Victorian-style entrance doors
  • Workshop keeps mess and disruption out of your home

Cons

  • Workshop is a bit far from Glasgow’s southern neighbourhoods
  • Response time to enquiries can take a full day

Reliable, professional and thoroughly nice people

“Have used Creation Carpentry twice and would 100% recommend them. Both jobs – a kitchen refit and ground floor flooring – were carried out to a high standard by Drew ably assisted by Josh and Liam. Great quote and advice before the jobs, always on time. Reliable, professional and thoroughly nice people. Will definitely use again. A company you can trust!”

-Stephen McKee, Google Reviews

The workmanship is fantastic and to a very high standard

“What can I say, we are delighted with the work recently completed by Colin & Drew in our house. They provide an amazing professional service from start to finish. The workmanship is fantastic and to a very high standard. I would recommend them to anyone looking for bespoke joinery services at a good price to meticulous standards.”

F.M. Joinery and Building Services has been operating in Glasgow since 2008, and they cover a wide range of work. What I noticed straight away is how varied their work is, offering services like full renovations, loft conversions, and media walls.

They also build garden cabins that are insulated and practical, giving you a proper space to relax or work in the summer months. Furthermore, they handle both timber and composite decking, which is handy if you want to improve your garden.

Another thing I noticed is that they can create bespoke pieces such as handrails, playhouses, and seating that fit awkward spaces. They offer free advice and estimates to make it easier to get started.

Unfortunately, despite carrying £2 million liability insurance, they don’t have a clear warranty policy, and they’re closed at weekends.

Pros

  • More than 15 years of experience
  • Can construct insulated garden cabins
  • Timber and composite decking options
  • Can create bespoke furniture and fixtures
  • Free advice and estimates available
  • Covered by £2 million liability insurance

Cons

  • Lacks a clear warranty policy
  • Unavailable on weekends

Couldn’t be happier with the end result

“Highly recommend Andrew and Daryl for the total experience of design to work conclusion. Hard grafting with attention to detail, perfect finish and tidying as they go along. Couldn’t be happier with the end result. Their taste in music isn’t too bad either!”

-Ray James, Google Reviews

Did a fabulous job in no time

“Wonderful experience from start to finish. Andrew was quick to reply to my e-mail, showed up when he said he would, was super polite, did a fabulous job in no time and left the space in perfect order. VERY reasonable price too! I will look no further in the future.”
